• Provides access to the outdoors and connects people to the natural resources through a system of trails and water recreation facilities.
• Operates and manages a system of recreational trails for all seasons and public water access, including: hiking; bicycling; in-line skating; horseback riding; cross-country skiing; snowmobiling; riding all terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles and off road vehicles; canoeing; kayaking; recreational boating; Lake Superior Safe Harbors; fishing piers and shore fishing sites; state forest recreation opportunities; and stewardship for the state's lakes, rivers and trails.
• Administers grants-in-aid to local units of government who partner with local volunteer clubs to maintain snowmobile, off-highway vehicle, and cross-country ski trails.
