- The Department of Natural Resources is negotiating the acquisition of approximately 3,000 acres of undeveloped land that is owned by U. S. Steel and is adjacent to Soudan Underground Mine State Park.
- The land is currently being proposed for residential development on Lake Vermilion, identified as the “Three Bays on Vermilion” project.
- The opportunity to purchase land that consists of natural and scenic resources to qualify as a state park from a single landowner is very rare.
- The importance of increasing the capacity of public recreation facilities to meet the expected future demand for current and new visitors on one of the largest and most scenic lakes in Minnesota is significant.
For more information about the proposed park contact Courtland Nelson, Director of Parks and Recreation at 651.259.5602, courtland.nelson@dnr.state.mn.us
Goal - Preserve the undeveloped lands along Lake Vermilion and create a flagship state park that showcases Minnesota's classic lake country.
