Type: Prairie Grasslands

ECS Subsection: Red River Prairie

Description:

Located within the basin of Glacial Lake Agassiz, this nearly level SNA contains undisturbed tallgrass and wet communities, with small scattered sedge meadows and willow thickets. Occasional boulders, called erratics, rest in earthen pits where they were deposited by a passing glacier long ago. Rare animal species include the marbled godwit, upland sandpiper, greater prairie chicken, and the prairie vole. Northern gentian and alkali grass are rare plants found on the site. Visit in early spring to hear the prairie chickens booming, and then again in late summer to see sunflowers and asters in bloom. * indicates ownership in part or in whole by The Nature Conservancy.
