Cross country ski trail grants-in-aid (GIA)
Program Purpose: To encourage the maintenance and development of cross country ski trails.
Eligible Projects: Cross-country ski trail development, maintenance, winter grooming, and trail administration.
Who May Apply: Counties, cities, townships, and private trail organizations sponsored by a local unit of government.
Priorities: First priority is given to the maintenance of existing Grants-in-Aid (GIA) trails. Second priority is given to projects which link population centers, recreation and service facilities. Third priority is given to the development of new trail systems or significant additions to existing systems.
Level of Assistance: Cost sharing up to 65% of total eligible costs. Winter trail grooming is cost shared up to 90% of total eligible costs.
General Information: This program was created by the State Legislature in 1973. Currently, the demand for this program greatly exceeds its funding level.

Maintenance and Grooming Application forms are also available from the Regional and Area Trails and Waterways Supervisors
and are due in the DNR area office by May 30. Capital Improvement Applications are due in the DNR area office by February 28th, 2008.
